Practical handbook: Competences for the new world of work

New world of work: Demands placed on employees

The practical handbook ‘Kompetenzen’, written by Michael Bartz, Lena Bodingbauer and Christopher Schwand, will be published in autumn 2024. The book focuses on the changing demands on employees in the post-pandemic world of work and provides practical solutions for developing new, future-oriented skills.

Michael Bartz, new work expert, announces the new reference book ‘Kompetenzen’, which offers practical solutions for the post-pandemic world of work.

The specialist book, which was funded by the Lower Austrian Chamber of Labour’s Work 4.0 project fund, is based on a three-year research project at IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems. Under the title ‘New worlds of work: Demands on employees after the pandemic’, the book analyses far-reaching changes in working environments and provides concrete recommendations for practice.

Changing working environments require new skills

“The pandemic has led to accelerated changes in our working environments. In particular, working from home and flexible working models have become established and require new skills from employees and managers alike,” explains Michael Bartz, expert in new work and lead author of the book. “Our practical handbook offers specific recommendations for action that will enable you to successfully master these new requirements.”

Four main areas of development in the modern world of work

The book takes an in-depth look at the four main areas of development in the modern world of work:

  1.    Mobile-flexible ways of working: expansion of location- and time-flexible work.
  2.    Digitalisation and AI in the workplace: greater use of digital tools and processes, including artificial intelligence.
  3.    Remote leadership: adapting leadership concepts to virtual teams.
  4.    New office utilisation concepts: adaptations for hybrid working models.

The research results are presented step by step and explained in a practical manner. The book stands out from other publications due to one significant difference: it does not discuss necessary skills and competence building on an abstract level. Instead, it conveys concrete behavioural patterns that can be implemented immediately or acquired step by step. This provides managers and employees with a clear guideline to meeting the challenges of the new world of work.
